Why it pays to shop around for car insurance

It can often come as a shock when you have to renew your car insurance, as the costs seem to be rising all the time. A great way to find cover at a reasonable price is to shop around and compare prices - that way, you can be confident you have got the best deal around.

Here are some of the advantages of spending time searching for quotes for cheap van insurance and car cover:

Get lower quotes

The obvious advantage of shopping around for car insurance quotes is that, by looking at the different prices from various financial services providers, you'll be able to find the best-priced premiums available.

It is worthwhile spending time reading about the products available, and what charges they impose. There can be a significant disparity between the prices of some premiums, and you could save yourself hundreds of pounds simply by checking out what the competition is like.

There are plenty of ways to find out what other insurance providers are charging for these products, so make sure you research thoroughly to get the best deals.

Beat your renewal quote

A great incentive for shopping around for new car insurance products is to beat the renewal quote you have been given by your insurance provider. People often simply accept the cost of their annual renewal fee year-in, year-out, without checking to see how much it has changed or to compare it against other insurance companies.

However, if you spend some time looking around, you're likely to find a cheaper product available that covers you for the same thing.

Insurance providers may try to increase the cost of your policy after a year or more, as they don't have to try to attract your custom. This could mean you find your costs steadily creep up. It is therefore worth your while taking your money elsewhere and looking for another company that is offering low-cost deals to win over new customers.

Use it to lower your quote

Once you have been given your quote from your insurance provider and found better deals are available elsewhere, you don't have to leave it at that. Call up the company and tell them what you have found, saying you are thinking of moving as you have located a cheaper price for a very similar policy.

This might encourage them to match the price of the product you have found, giving you the chance to have cheaper cover than you were originally quoted while not having to move from one service provider to another.

Or, they could offer to reduce the charge, so that it is more reasonable and similar to other products you found during your search. While it might not match the best-priced product you discovered, you may be happy with the cost and be willing to stay with the company in order to save any extra hassles signing up to a new insurance provider.

Use price comparison sites for your search

The best way to find the cheapest price for your car or van insurance is to take a look on the internet. As well as researching the websites of big name providers to see what quotes they can give you, it is worth checking out price comparison sites.

By typing in specific information about yourself and your car - such as how old the vehicle is and whether you have made any insurance claims recently - the websites will be able to compile a list of products that are suitable for you.

If you sort these by putting the least expensive option first, you will be able to quickly see which insurance provider offers you the cheapest deal - and check out how much it differs form the quote you have recently been given.

It is also worth noting that the least expensive product might not necessarily be the best one for you, so take a thorough look at what each policy covers. This way, you will be confident that the product you end up with is not only cost-effective, but also valuable to you, and you will definitely be able to use the insurance protection when you need it.
