Stock market analysis from The Share Centre
Nick Raynor, investment adviser at The Share Centre, comments on this week's market.
He said: "Quite a quiet week on the FTSE 100 this week, with the only a few companies involved in takeover talks and results.
"ICI rebuffed a 600p cash per share offer from Akzo Nobel but analysts are in no doubt that a further offer will be forthcoming, whether it be from Akzo or another interested party.
"While within the mining sector rumours have been rife that BHP Billiton has been showing an interest in Canadian aluminium maker Alcan Inc, Alcan is already subject to a hostile bid from Alcoa Inc.
"Tesco surprised the market with a weaker than expected set of Q1 figures, Sainsbury's followed suit on Wednesday and this had a knock-on effect throughout the retailing sector.
"For the week the FTSE 100 fell 165 points to close at 6,567."
