Stock market analysis from The Share Centre

Friday, 23 February 2007 12:00

Nick Raynor, investment adviser at The Share Centre, comments on this week's market.

"The FTSE 100 reached as high as 6,451 this week only to suffer from nerves a touch and eventually fall back below its opening level on Monday of 6,419.

"The Dow Jones crashed through the 12,700 barrier and analysts will be looking for the index to stabilise above 12,600 or we could see further downside.

"This week's focus was on companies issuing figures and not the usual takeover rumours. The banking sector kicked off the reporting season with Alliance & Leicester and Lloyds; several other banks are releasing results in the forthcoming week.

"Results were issued that the market took a disliking to and this included Scottish & Newcastle and Intercontinental Hotels. Any takeover speculation that was circulating the index was for Drax and Hanson. For the week, the FTSE 100 fell 18 points to close at 6,401."
