FTSE 100 jumps on opening

The FTSE 100 jumped in early trading, breaking the 6100 barrier and standing up 52.50 points to 6122.10 at 10:10 BST.

Tullow Oil was up 3.06 per cent as it led early gains, followed by hedge fund Man Group (up 2.89 per cent) after it recorded a 30 per cent rise in annual profits.

Cairn Energy and copper miner Antofagasta were up 2.5 per cent and 2.87 per cent respectively.

Prudential rose 2.36 per cent - as interest in the insurance specialists continues from yesterday.

Biggest falls were seen for HBOS (down 1.62 per cent), SABMiller (down 1.16 per cent) and Barclays (down 1.1 per cent).

Property also took a bashing after Nationwide revealed further house price falls.

Capital & Regional was down 3.63 per cent, Taylor Wimpey fell 3.48 per cent and Bovis was down 2.73 per cent. Barratt Developments and construction suppler Wolseley also fell.
