FTSE 100 dips on opening

The FTSE 100 started the week slowly after last week's later rally.

The index fell 0.33 per cent to 5,358.60 at 9:56 BST.

Energy services from John Wood was up 4.4 per cent in early trading, followed by miners BHP Billiton (up 3.25 per cent), Kazakhmys (up 3.11 per cent), and Lonmin (up 2.49 per cent).

Severn Trent rose 2.69 per cent.

Insurance giant Aviva fell 5.01 per cent, while Friends Provident was down 4.05 per cent and Schroders dropped 3.69 per cent.

Pharma firm Shire was down 4.41 per cent and Intercontinental Hotels fell 4.26 per cent.

Outside the FTSE 100, property saw some boost, with Rightmove and Barratt Developments both up 6.57 per cent. St Modwen Properties rose 6.53 per cent.

HBOS was down 2.84 per cent on the news its rights issue garnered support from just eight per cent of shareholders.

Sterling was unchanged against the dollar at $1.99525 and down 0.25 per cent against the euro at ?1.25630.
