FTSE 100 jumps on opening

The FTSE 100 jumped over 4,300 on opening - after yesterday's falls.

At 8:52 GMT - after falling from initial gains - the index stood at 4,269.32, a rise of 22.63 points or 0.53 per cent.

Last night on Wall Street the Dow Jones fell 1.99 per cent, while in Asia the Nikkei was down 1.29 per cent and the Hang Seng dropped 0.73 per cent.

In Europe, markets started positively with the Dax up 0.74 per cent and the Cac 40 rising 0.62 per cent.

In London, miners again saw drops, with Vedanta Resources down 7.54 per cent and Kazakhmys down 4.51 per cent.

Tech stocks Autonomy and Inmarsat were down 5.38 per cent and 4.30 per cent respectively.

Marks & Spencer was down 4.21 per cent.

Vodafone continued its good fortune from yesterday - rising 5.87 per cent - while insurers were up; Admiral and Aviva rose 4.33 per cent and 3.36 per cent respectively.

Wood Group gained 4.06 per cent and Scottish & Southern Energy was up 3.41 per cent.

On the currency markets the pound was down against the dollar and euro to $1.5629 and ?1.2255 - making ?1 worth 81.6p and $1 worth 64p.
