FTSE 100 jumps on opening

The FTSE 100 started Friday with a jump, following positive trading in the US.

The first hour of trading saw the index rise 0.48 per cent to 4,272.83 at 09:01 BST - a gain of 20.26 points.

In initial trading the FTSE 100 broke the 4,300 level, but quickly fell back.

Miners led the way with Kazakhmys rising 4.40 per cent, Xstrata up 3.06 per cent and Lonmin gaining 2.95 per cent.

Builders merchant Wolseley - often seen as a marker for the construction industry as a whole - rose 4.17 per cent, while British Airways gained 3.63 per cent on its cost cutting plans of having 800 members of staff work for free.

Hedge fund Man Group was down 1.97 per cent, while Legal & General dipped 1.58 per cent.

Lloyds Banking dropped 1.47 per cent to 65.52p.

Last night in New York, the Dow Jones was up 2.08 per cent, with no stocks seeing falling, while Chicago's S&P 500 rose 2.14 per cent
