FTSE 100 continues rally

The FTSE 100 rose 0.22 per cent to 4,767.24 by 09:00 BST, continuing yesterday's rally after a shaky start.

Opening lower, the FTSE 100 quickly picked up and continued with its rise, with British Airways leading the way, up by 2.85 per cent.

Legal and General followed with a 2.31 per cent rise, while textile group Intertek was up by 2.27 per cent.

Firmer metal prices also helped miners, with Fresnillo up by 1.32 per cent, Vedanta Resources up by 1.32 and Xstrata up by 1.17 per cent.

Several stocks were drifting downwards on the index, led by Sage Group, which fell by 2.62 per cent, followed by advertiser WPP Group, which was down by 2.01 per cent.

Over in the US, Wall Street closed higher, with the Dow Jones up by 0.76 per cent, and the S&P 500 up by 1.09 per cent.
