The FTSE 100 was down slightly this morning - but held onto gains from yesterday that pushed it over 5,200.

Meanwhile last night in New York, the Dow broke through the 10,000 mark with a gain of the day of 1.47 per cent - pushed ahead by JPMorgan announcing a third quarter profit of $3.6 billion (£2.25 billion)

The Dow was last over 10,000 in October last year, but it still remains below highs of over 14,000 in October 2007.

Meanwhile, the FTSE 100 was last over 5,200 in September last year, but managed to break 6,500 in October 2007.

At 08:54 BST, the FTSE 100 was down 0.35 per cent to 5.237.48 - a drop of 18.62 points.

As miners pushed the index up yesterday, commodity stocks put the brakes on today.

Anglo American was down 3.55 per cent, Cairn Energy dropped 2.69 per cent, Vedanta Resources slipped 1.84 per cent and Xstrata fell 1.75 per cent.

Builders merchant Wolseley fell 2.19 per cent.
