Can I protect my cash from further stock market falls?

A reader from Aldershot is looking to invest in the stock market - but wants to protect himself from any falls.

Andrew Norton, Halifax and Bank of Scotland investments expert, tackles the problem.

Michael from Aldershot asks:

What investments exist to protect my cash if the stock market falls further?

Or should I just grin and bear it and look five years down the line?

Andrew replies:

Investing in shares has traditionally provided a better return over the long term and the longer you leave your investment, the more likely you are to see a return.

The downside is that you may get back less than you invested.

There are options available that can guarantee and/or protect your original capital investment and it is worth speaking to a financial adviser so they can assess the level of risk you're willing to take and advise you of the next steps to be taken.
