Legal & General customers were paid more than £413 million in bonuses last year.

The financial company delivered 14 per cent return to With Profits customers before tax in 2009, which it described as a "strong return".

Carl Dowthwaite, an actuary for With Profits, said: "In recent volatile markets the core features of With Profits, including the greater stability offered by smoothing, continue to prove attractive for many savers."

The return over the year on Legal & General's ten-year pension plan was 20.1 per cent on around £23,000 investment.

An example of the growth offered is £12,121 being paid out on a £10,000 investment secured for ten years.
