The FTSE 100 Index opened down 14.05 points, or 0.25 per cent at 5,519.16 in early trading as the City waited for the Bank of England's monthly interest rates decision.

Amec suffered the biggest slump, slipping 7.07 per cent to 762.5p. Aviva and Fresnillo also fell 2.05 per cent and 1.73 per cent respectively.

Schroders experienced the best of the morning's trading, rising 3.58 per cent to 1,070p.

Liberty International and Lloyds Banking Group also rose significantly, up 1.68 per cent and 1.57 per cent.

Traders will be keeping a keen eye out for the Bank of England's interest rates decision at midday today, although the Bank is expected to hold them at their current rate of 0.5 per cent and say it will not be restarting its quantitative easing programme for the moment.
