Precious metals a good investment option?

Tuesday, 08 March 2011 12:00

Precious metals are the best-performing asset class for the second year in a row and the fourth time in the past five years.

That is according to Lloyds TSB, which revealed that last year investors enjoyed a return of 42 per cent from precious metals due to in part to continued uncertainty over the prospects for the global economy.

Suren Thiru, economist at Lloyds TSB, stated it was unsurprising to learn they were the top-performing asset in 2010 as "investors looked to protect the value of their investments amid the renewed uncertainty over the global economic outlook".

He added silver continues to outshine gold and platinum with the relatively low value of silver providing greater scope for larger gains.

Lloyds revealed silver outperformed the other precious metals in 2010 with prices rising by 80 per cent, more than two and a half times the increase in gold prices (29 per cent).
