Barclays ISA investors backing UK

New research from Barclays Stockbrokers reveals that the majority of their investment ISA holders plan to invest in the UK during the next tax year.

When asked to select which regions they were looking to invest in 80 per cent chose the UK. Emerging markets were also backed strongly with 37 per cent of respondents planning part of their funds to be invested there. Asia was next on the list, favoured by 28 per cent, followed by the USA and Europe with 24 per cent.

The research also quizzed investors over sources used to inform investment decisions and found that 80 per cent use newspapers whilst 42 per cent took advice from financial commentators.

Paul Inkster, Vice President, Barclays Stockbrokers, comments: "While the majority of Barclays Stockbrokers ISA clients continue to favour the UK for their investments in the next tax year, there remains a strong trend towards overseas markets, particularly Emerging Markets. With inflation in the UK running above 4 per cent, investors need to work hard to generate positive real returns, and of course self-select ISAs are becoming increasingly popular as a result.”

Further research from Barclays Stockbrokers showed that 96 per cent of ISA investments by their clients were in equities. Funds and exchange traded funds (ETFs) made up the remainder. The most purchased stocks in the 2010-11 tax-year were in oil and gas companies.
