Brits do nothing about 'worrying' finances
While more than two Britons in five worry about the state of their finances, most have done nothing to deal with this, according to new figures.
Some 43 per cent of UK residents are concerned about money matters, and 58 per cent of these have not done anything to improve matters, research from National Savings & Investments (NS&I) shows.
Rather than acting, some 21 per cent of Brits choose to spend now, and worry about saving later; 18 per cent think they are too stuck in their ways to change; 16 per cent do not know what they could do to make matters better; and 14 per cent do not know who to turn to for advice.
"Today's findings reveal an underlying fear of getting to grips with the essential day-to-day management of personal finances, from household bills through to credit card debt and savings," said Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist at NS&I.
"There is clearly still a big need for more accessible financial education to help people get over their fears and sort their finances out."
The biggest worry people have about their money is that they are not saving enough for their future, with 29 per cent of Britons sharing this concern. Not having enough to increase savings worries 16 per cent of UK residents, while 13 per cent think their debt levels are too high.
Of the minority that have taken action to address their money troubles, 32 per cent have spoken to their bank or building society with a similar number speaking to a relative or friend.
"There are some simple things you can do to get a better grip on your finances, as shown by those that are taking action," said Mr Harkins.
"Whether it's just talking it over with a friend or relative, getting professional advice from an Independent Financial Adviser [IFA] or starting to increase your savings, it is important that those Brits who are anxious about their financial situation resist the temptation to bury their head in the sand and do something about those sleepless nights."
