Barclays is launching a new way to give cash this Christmas.

Barclays Gift Card is being marketed as an alternative to gift vouchers or traditional festive cheques, giving recipients the chance to spend their present as they wish.

Cards - costing £3 and valid for two years - can be loaded with between £10 and £300 and cannot be used at cash machines, only to pay for goods at shops or online where Visa Electron cards are accepted.

It can also be cancelled if lost or stolen.

Andrew Jones, product director for Barclays current account and savings, said: "We are expecting the Barclays Gift Card to be really popular in the run up to Christmas.

"As a pre-paid card it is more secure than cash and more flexible than vouchers so that should make it really popular with those who receive it too!"

The card has the users name on it - so only the recipient can use it - and features the choice of six designs, including Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, Congratulations and Thank You.
