Queen to take on credit crunch and recession in Christmas message

Wednesday, 24 December 2008 11:06

The Queen will acknowledge the difficulties facing many Britons due to the current economic downturn in her annual Christmas broadcast.

Her Majesty will say in her speech that many people have recently been affected by world events, be it the impending global recession or foreign violence.

"Some of those things which could once have been taken for granted suddenly seem less certain and naturally give rise to feelings of insecurity," she is expected to say.

"People are touched by events which have their roots far across the world. Whether it is the global economy or violence in a distant land, the effects can be keenly felt at home."

This year's message was recorded in the Music Room at Buckingham Palace and will see the Queen pay tribute to the selfless contribution of those who have helped others.

She is also expected to make particular reference to her eldest son, and heir to the throne, Prince Charles who celebrated his 60th birthday this year.

The Queen's Speech is due to be broadcast at 15:00 GMT tomorrow.
