When should I take out a graduate loan?

Tuesday, 24 March 2009 02:13

A reader from London is wondering if he should take out a graduate loan after leaving university this summer.

Jo Crosse, Halifax and Bank of Scotland personal loans expert, tackles the problem.

Matthew from London asks:

I'm going to graduate in the summer. Do I have to get a graduate loan from my current bank?

Also do I need a job lined up first? I was planning to travel before getting a job.

Jo replies

Some lenders require you to have a current account with them in order to apply for a graduate loan. It will probably help your application if you have an existing relationship with the bank.

Most lenders would require you to be in permanent employment (either full-time or part-time) or to have a firm job offer, so it's worth checking the application criteria before you apply.
