Drivers believe £2,000 is not enough for them to taken advantage of the government's car scrappage scheme.

While initial interest in the scheme has been high - with many drivers waiting to buy before the initiative went live - there is still much suspicion.

A poll by myfinances.co.uk found 80 per cent of readers would not be taking up the offer of £2,000 for scrapping their old car.

On average they said a deal worth £6,100 would be enough for them to cash in their old car.

The £2,000 level was originally suggested by borrowers

Some 50 per cent thought the scheme should also run for longer than the initial 11 months or the funding for 300,000 cars.

Some 60 per cent of myfinances readers also thought car dealers were likely to push up the costs of new cars - and so cancel part of the gains.
