Property prices in England and Wales climbed by 0.4 per cent between June and July, according to the latest figures from the Land Registry.

The government agency said the average home cost £166,798 last month - 6.7 per cent more than July 2009.

In the 12 months covered by its report, prices rose in nine English and Welsh regions.

The biggest increase was in the capital, where the value of the average home climbed by 12.1 per cent.

At the other end of the scale, the north-west recorded the biggest annual fall in prices at 1.4 per cent.

The Land Registry said that its latest transaction figures showed there were 49,412 house sales agreed in England and Wales during May.

This was up by eight per cent on the 45,814 deals recorded a year earlier.

According to separate figures published by the Department for Communities and Local Government, the average house price for the UK as a whole stood at £210,775 during June.
