Building society mortgage lending tops £1.9bn in July

Gross mortgage lending by the UK's building societies topped £1.9 billion during July, according to the latest figures from one industry body.

The Building Societies Association (BSA) said the value of new home loans was up 11 per cent on June's total of £1.79 billion.

Indeed, the organisation said July was the strongest month for mortgage lending by mutuals this year.

BSA director-general Adrian Coles said the upward trend looks set to continue for now.

"Nevertheless, while the outlook appears a little brighter, there remain significant challenges, such as heightened uncertainty about job prospects and household incomes, potentially limiting future demand," he added.

Earlier this month, the Council of Mortgage Lenders said the total value of home loans advanced by banks and building societies during July was £13.6 billion.

Meanwhile, figures from Nationwide put the average cost of a home in the UK at 169,347 last month.
