Repossession hotspots revealed

Householders in Corby in the East Midlands are more at risk of losing their home through repossession than anyone else in the country on average, according to a report from Shelter.

The housing charity reports that the community tops the repossessions table, with Barking and Dagenham, and Newham, both in London, close behind.

In the north-west, Knowsley is an area of high risk, while in the east of England Thurrock also sees relatively high levels of repossession.

Next year, Shelter warns that as many as 45,000 repossessions are expected to take place across the UK.

"This research paints a frightening picture of repossession hotspots across the country where homeowners are literally on the brink of losing the roof over their head," says Shelter chief executive Campbell Robb.

It is not only the financial toll of repossession that is causing concern for the organisation at present; Shelter recently highlighted the psychological impact of housing costs on those with affordability issues.

Over 18 million people across the UK are currently experiencing stress or depression due to the monetary impact of paying for their homes, a YouGov survey conducted for Shelter revealed.

This is more than the number of people who meet their mortgage repayments or rent without problems, which stands at about 13 million individuals.
