Repayment mortgages

Repayment mortgages are the most popular type of mortgage in the UK. With a repayment mortgage the borrower makes a repayment each month that pays off the interest and part of the capital borrowed.
In the early stages of a repayment mortgage the borrower will mainly be paying off interest and just a small proportion of the capital. As the mortgage term progresses the balance of your repayments will gradually switch so that you pay off more of the capital and less interest until the total loan is repaid at the end of the agreed mortgage term.
