Travel insurance a must for sports fans

As England fans look forward to a summer of sport, warnings have emerged over the danger of travelling uninsured.
"It is common for sports fans to let their enthusiasm get the better of them and dash off with passport in hand without checking their insurance. But many could suffer a worse disaster than a lost match if they don't have adequate cover," said David Norton of Halifax General Insurance.
And there is a lot to get enthusiastic about: The Ashes, the Lions tour to New Zealand, England football touring the US, not to mention annual events such as the Le Mans 24-hour race and the Tour de France.
But past experience shows that as more of the 'Barmy Army' travel, there are more claims on travel insurance.
During the Olympics in August 2004 claims shot up on average by 66 per cent, Halifax revealed.
And the insurer recommends that travelling Brits ensure their policy covers ticket loss.
Other top tips for travelling support from Halifax General Insurance include:
- Ensure you have an up to date travel policy - even if you are only going on a day trip
- Get an E111 for you and all members of your party when travelling to EU member states
- Have the contact details of your insurer to hand when travelling in case of an emergency
- Carry an identity necklace or bracelet if you have a pre-existing condition or allergy and always disclose this information to your policy provider
- Always buy tickets from a reputable source
- Make sure that you keep receipts for match tickets so that you can make a claim if you lose them
