Citizens Advice: Return tax credit paperwork as soon as possible

Monday, 18 July 2011 01:56

Citizens Advice has urged everyone who has claimed tax credits over the past year to check and act on their renewal forms in order to avoid having to repay any money received from April 6th.

It went on to advise anyone who has not received their renewal pack to contact HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) straight away, as there is less than two weeks to go until the deadline for submission (July 31st).

Gillian Guy, chief executive at Citizens Advice said "shocking" HMRC figures revealed that nearly 200,000 families have to pay back money they are entitled to every year because they did not complete their end-of-year forms.

"Technically, not returning the paperwork means the money they received in tax credits since April all counts as an overpayment," she added.

"We know from our own evidence that people find the system really hard to understand, but the main thing you need to know is that if you've claimed tax credits at all over the last year - even if your claim has now stopped – it's absolutely vital you check your forms and take action."
