Staying out of trouble on the roads can save you £10,000 on car insurance payments over your driving lifetime.
New figures from Privilege Insurance show that someone with a four-year no-claims discount can save £203 on their annual car insurance premiums.
Over the course of a motoring lifetime this adds up to over £10,000 - more than enough to pay for a new car.
"The research shows that safe drivers are saving thousands of pounds by staying accident free, as well as making the roads a safer place for us all," said Ian Parker, Privilege Insurance managing director.
"The lifetime saving that safe drivers can make is further incentive for all drivers to take care when behind the wheel."
As well as staying out of trouble and following the rules of the road Privilege had other tips for people looking to cut the cost of their car insurance.
Privilege also advises people looking to lower their car insurance to:
If possible, keep your car in a garage – or, at least, on your driveway.
Resist the urge to modify your vehicle – or check the implications with your insurance company before you do. Modifying can up the cost of your premium so it may make more sense to stick with the standard model.
Protect your no-claims discount. Your no-claims discount can bring you substantial savings. As a result, you may want to protect your no-claims discount by paying a small charge. This means that if you are unlucky enough to have an accident, you will not lose all of your discount next time round.
Make sure your car is secure. Fitting an immobiliser will bring your premium down – but only if it is 'Thatcham' approved (the motor industry standard for security products). Owners of high value vehicles should also fit tracking devices such as a tracker.
