Pet owners are being warned the sudden cold snap due to hit the UK brings several dangers for beloved animals.
Per insurance provider Petplan has highlighted the two main offenders: antifreeze and road salt.
Anti-freeze can prove fatal to pets but, unfortunately, it also includes an ingredient – ethylene glycol – which attracts animals because of its sweet smell.
Even small amounts consumed by a stray pet can lead to a trip to the vet - so owners are being warned to be cautious of any spillages.
Rock salt can hit dogs' paws irritating them and causing them to split open and bleed. A dog licking the salt can also face stomach problems.
Eric McCarrison, a vet at Chesterfield-based Carrick Vets, said: "All owners need to do is make sure their pets' feet are cleaned and properly dried, particularly between the toes, to prevent dermatitis.
"Keep a check for cracks, redness or bleeding which will need veterinary treatment since animals may chew at itchy skin making the problem worse."
He added: "Cat owners should also check feet if their pet appears to be lame or licking its paws excessively."
Mr McCarrison went on to warn owners of animals with thick coats in wet weather.
"Thick coats can get soaked through and chilled possibly reducing their resistance to infection. They should always be thoroughly dried after being out in wet weather," he concluded.
