Travellers make 68 claims a day for baggage

Monday, 22 Sep 2008 17:16
As many as 6,150 travel insurance baggage claims were submitted to UK insurers between April and June this year.

Of these, around 50.4 per cent were for damaged items, 26 per cent for lost or delayed luggage and 23.6 per cent for missing items taken from people's luggage, travel insurer InsureandGo has estimated.

Perry Wilson, founder of InsureandGo, said: "Between April and June this year, we estimate that the travel insurance industry has received around 68 claims a day for lost or damaged baggage, but this is only the tip of the iceberg because many victims of this problem will not have had insurance.

"It is clear that the aviation industry needs to do more to reduce the number of bags they lose."

Advice for air passengers on what you can do if your baggage gets lost in transit is now available at www.euroconsumer.org.uk, the website of the UK European Consumer Centre (ECC), hosted by Citizens Advice.
