
Investments: FTSE down early

The FTSE 100 started the day heading downwards – down 1.2 per cent to 6203.30 at 9:48 BST.
Early falls were recorded for Carphone Warehouse, Alliance & Leicester and Paypal.
Banks HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays also all recorded early falls.
Carphone Warehouse saw falls as the markets were not too impressed by its deal to sell off part of its retail chain to US electronics giant Best Buy.
British Energy was also under pressure after suggestions one if its potential buyers had left the race.
On the upside high-tech engineering firm IMI saw gains on good results, along with Dairy Crest, Imperial Energy and Kingfisher.
In Europe both the Cac and Dax saw falls with pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis and Deutsche Boerse seeing the greatest falls on the two markets respectively.
Last night both the Nasdaq and Dow Jones ended up by 0.52 per cent and 0.41 per cent.
