Free security software for Barclays online and phone banking

Barclays has become the first British bank to offer free security software to its online and phone banking users.

The software, provided by internet security firm Kaspersky, includes anti-virus, anti-spam and anti-theft protection and is available to download free of charge

Director for electronic banking, Sean Gilchrist, said: "Barclays has offered customers one of the best security packages of all online banks over the last two years."

This follows the bank's pledge last year to offer free internet security software, by supplying its PINsentry authentication system to each of its 2 million online banking customers.

A revamped site for the Barclays.mobi facility is also being introduced, which will provide "easier and more intuitive" banking for those accessing the internet through a web-enabled mobile phone.

Barclays.mobi was created as a mobile web link in May 2007, presenting specifically optimised pages of Barclay's online banking service for viewing over mobile phones.

The technology will protect mobiles, including smartphones, from virus or network attack and unwanted text message spam, as well as providing remote data deleting or phone blocking in case of theft.

Mr. Gilchrist continued: "It's important that customers protect their mobile phones in the same way they do their computers from all threats, by downloading this new software."
