Christmas rush at cash machines

Today is set to be the busiest day on record for Christmas cash spenders, data reveals.

Over the last few weeks people have been taking more cash out of ATMS than during last year's festive shopping period.

But today cash machine activity is set to peak as people rush to ensure they have enough money to spend on last minute presents and to see them through Christmas.

According to Tesco, which has published the data, it is anticipated its ATMs will be handling 20 per cent more transactions today than last year.

And its cash machines are expected to issue nearly £1 billion to shoppers over the Christmas period.

Steward Gow, head of ATMs at Tesco Bank, said: "It's already shaping up to be a cash Christmas for most Brits this year and we're working hard to ensure our network of cash machines is well stocked to cope with record levels of demand."
