RBS & Natwest follow HSBC in online banking errors

Sunday, 06 November 2011 02:44

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Natwest customers have been locked out of their online accounts due to problems caused by maintenance work which went wrong.

The bank said that the problems were caused by a routine error and was not the result of an attack by hackers.

This has meant that some customers have not had their accounts credited with receipts and account balances were not updated overnight. It has also affected some customers who have not been able to make withdrawals from cash machines as funds had not cleared.

The failure of the online service potentially affected 15 million customers who have an account with RBS or Natwest.

RBS has said that it hopes to resolve the situation as soon as possible and apologised for the inconvenience caused to customers. However, the problems were still not resolved 15 hours after the problem first started.

A spokesman said: ‘We apologise for any inconvenience. Our ATM and card payment systems are operational and customers can use these as normal. There have been problems affecting online and telephone banking but we have a good understanding of the issues and are making good progress with our recovery plans.’
